- Cobblestone Quest by Rich Freeman
.
"Go on a Cobblestone Quest. Why, during a mere 35 years in the
mid-19th century, were approximately 700 cobblestone structures
erected in Western New York State and no where else in such numbers?
Learn the answer to this question as you drive any of the 17
self-guided tours mapped and described in “Cobblestone Quest - Road
Tours of New York’s Historic Buildings” The cobblestone houses, churches, schools, barns,
smokehouses, etc. are each unique works of craftsmanship that
progressed to an art form just before the Civil War. It’s a testament
to the fine workmanship that many of these structures survive today.
Imagine the pioneers clearing the forest and tilling the land to
unearth cobblestones or hauling them for miles by oxcart from the
shores of Lake Ontario, then building a house stone by stone. It was
arduous labor, but they did it with flair.
